Voice Over Internet Protocol is a method for taking analog audio signals and turning them into digital data that can be transmitted over the Internet. Conventional telephone systems, such as those used in a residential home, currently use analog signaling to transfer Voice from one handset to another in the world through a series of telephone company switches.

The Internet uses digital signals to transfer data through a massive network of switches world wide. What VoIP does is translate those analog signals currently used into digital signals, sends them across the Internet, then translates them back into analog signals on the other end. Imagine communicating with remote offices and remote workers without incurring toll costs.
