How does KWB work?

Kaplan Wireless Broadband (KWB) uses a digital microwave transmission technology known as unlicensed wireless. Our technician installs your transceiver dish and an external high-speed cable modem. The KWB modem is coupled to an Ethernet NIC (Network Interface Card) in your computer (supplied by customer). Your computer must have a NIC card installed. You can install a NIC card yourself, or local computer stores can provide and install a NIC card for you. The modem and transceiver dish are supplied at no additional charge. Should either fail to operate, a KWB technician will install a replacement unit free of charge. Connection to KWB is as automatic as starting up your Web browser. There's no waiting to connect, as there is with a dial-up modem. From there, the signal is routed through our servers to the Internet's backbone. The Web page or file you request is beamed directly to your transceiver and relayed to your computer (or to multiple users in a Local Area Network) at speeds 12 to 25 times faster than a dial-up connection.

How reliable is KWB service?

The radio circuit is engineered to provide generous margins against signal disturbances or stray interference. The KWB network equipment is backed up by uninterruptible power supplies and generators. KWB operates on frequencies that are virtually unaffected by the weather. We have continued to operate without the slightest of interruption through the heaviest fog and rains.

How does KWB compare to other broadband technologies?

Broadband has exploded due to the tremendous demand for high-bandwidth applications and entertainment delivered over the internet. Many may question their best option. KWB, DSL and cable modem differ in various ways.

Comparatively, if DSL or cable modem service is offered in your area, their product availability and speed is often contingent upon build out of their local networks and equipment location. KWB, since it is a wireless service, can make adjustments to available bandwidth quickly, as demand changes. Due to the additive nature of cable modems, there can be performance problems related to the physical limits of the copper wire. Additionally, as more users log on, they directly affect performance for all other users upstream and downstream. KWB is not affected by these limitations. However, in unlicensed wireless services, KWB is susceptible to interference. Unlicensed wireless services operate on the same 900MHz frequency range as portable phones, garage door openers, home wireless networks, security systems, and even some microwave ovens. As a result, unlicensed wireless systems can be subject to interference -- resulting in service disruptions.

What are the minimum computer requirements?

The minimum hardware requirements for KWB service are listed below. If you need help in determining whether your computer meets the minimum requirements, please call us at 643-7171.

  • 300 MHz (or faster) Pentium-based processor (or equivalent)
  • Windows 98 SE, Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating system
  • 32 MB RAM
  • Installed CD-ROM drive
  • Installed 10 BASE-T Ethernet Network Interface Card (NIC) or open USB port
  • Laptop computers must already have an installed 10 BASE-T Ethernet NIC with RJ45 connectivity or a USB port
  • Microsoft TCP/IP stack supporting DHCP addressing (802.3 standards)

How is KTC Wireless Broadband service installed?

Our professional installation technicians will ensure you receive the best service possible. In some areas, prior to installation, a site survey visit may be scheduled to ensure your location has proper line of site to our transmission towers. This visit does not require your presence as the technician will be evaluating your location externally. However, accommodations must be made to allow the technician access to the roof of your location. Once proper line of site is determined, one of our representatives will set an appointed time for our technician to install the service. This appointment generally takes between 90 minutes to three hours. The installer will place a digital transceiver on the outside of your location (usually on the facia board) using a standard satellite dish mounting bracket. A cable is connected to the transceiver and routed to an entry point near the location of your computer. The installer will also set up a broadband modem which connects to an Ethernet NIC card in your computer or to your home network. If you do not have a NIC card and want KTC to install a USB converter (at an extra charge), please include this on your Service Order. If you do not own the building, a "landlord permission form" needs to be completed indicating you have obtained permission from the owner prior to installation.

How fast is KWB?

KWB users can select from 4 levels of service; 512kbps, 768kbps, 1Mbps, & 1.2 Mbps. No matter how fast your connection, speeds on the Internet itself can affect upload and download performance.

How much does KWB cost?

Our professional installation is $149.95.

NO LONG TERM CONTRACT is required. All of our services are offered on a month-to-month basis.

4 levels of wireless service (residential only)

  • 512 kbps - $35.95 / month
  • 768 kbps - $55.95 / month
  • 1 Mbps - $85.95 / month
  • 1.2 Mbps - $145.95 / month

4 levels of wireless service (business only)
